Worship In The Wilderness

Helen Berhane, the Eritrean gospel singer, was beaten and imprisoned for 32 months in a shipping container in under the ground cells at the Mai-Serwa military camp, without adequate ventilation, light, sanitation or food. This happened soon after releasing an album of gospel music popular among young Eritrean Christians.

While in prison Helen was regularly tortured, and a severe and sustained assault by a prison guard almost killed her and left her unable to walk. She has repeatedly refused to sign a paper recanting her faith and to end all participation in christian activities, which included her music.

Helen was released in November 2006 and escaped to Sudan, where she had to keep a low profile. She was finally granted asylum in Denmark.
